Lalbagh of Bangalore
The lalbagh of Bangalore evolved over the years from a tiny mango grove perhaps planted by the Kempegowda ,the builder of Bangalore. The marathas under Shahji from 1638 to 1666 used the mango grove as royal retreat .The when celebrated Shivaji, the future king of maratha kingdom lived in Bangalore for two years from 1640 to 1642
he must have visited the mango grove, rather retreat. When Hyder ali was conferred with Bangalore as his jahagir in 1759 he asked his killedars of bangalore- Ibrahim khan to develop the grove as ornamental garden by planting cypress trees which would act as screens for ghosha ladies of his harem. He infact never had an house to live in Bangalore from 1757 to 1780, there after palace was built. More over he was always in warfield. He in fact died in a tent in the war field near chittore in 1782.
Tippu became ruler of Mysore in 1782 there after he improved the garden methodicaly in another patch closeby. Dr. Buchanon mentioned in his report of his survey that two gardens - one Hyder's and another tippu's existed in 1800.
